I've been painting murals since 1996, starting on the nursery walls of New Life Christian Fellowship in Jacksonville, Fl. So last year I approached my friends at St. Michaels Soldiers about a mural idea. I was thinking of painting wings, with a flag, and they were excited to memorialize some first-responders that they knew and lost in the community.
It just so happened that a local philanthropist and business owner decided to donate a 50 ft. wall to us for just such a painting!
What began as a 2 week project soon became 5 weeks as we dodged daily rainclouds, wind and even a few cold-fronts, surprisingly in Florida!
I was contracted as the Project Manager, and actually took sometime off from my work with another charity where I work part-time. With the help of several artists friends, The Green Cove Springs Memorial Wall, #SMSHeroProject, is complete.
It is So special to honor these first responders this way, and the families that lost them. St. Michael's Soldiers will be hosting a dedication soon at the wall, bringing all of the families together. Below are a few pictures of the process from designing it, and the execution of getting it on this 50 foot wall. I can't express how enjoyable it is to work alongside some of my favorite artist colleagues and see this come to fruition.
You can also see a video of the process Here.
Yes, Kathy Plante and I hand-painted the lettering in this plaque. The temp dropped down in the 40s so we had to delay it a few days since our hands were so numb.
But you know what they say about Florida - "If you don't like the weather, just wait a few days." So we did.
See the eagle on the top as a flag post?
Once the wall was completed the charity acquired a 200 pound concrete eagle which was adhered to the rooftop, to be the top of the flag post.
Thank you to all who made this project happen!! Including Steve Schneller's drone work.
Artists included: Kathy Plante, Beth Haizlip, Lynette Woodman, Lori Butler, Kim Hinkle, Alison McCauley, and Andrea Sibilla
Thank you to PPG paints for donating all the primer, paints and sealant!!
If you happen to drive through Green Cove Springs the wall is on the corner of Palmer and US 17.
Here is an article about it in Clay Today.
Here is a post about our first Green Cove Mural project, just across the street.

This past year, with the unsurety of the Pandemic and isolation, I felt a calling back to those butterflies that had given me so much quiet joy in the past.
Usually when I paint birds or butterflies, they sell quickly, but I have been gathering a collection of smaller works, affordable for anyone who wishes to collect some beauty for their home. They will be included in an upcoming exhibit called S O L A C E. at the Jewish Community Alliance Center in Jacksonville, FL.
