"Storms make trees grow deeper roots."
I had the privilege this week of teaching a painting class to 40 mentally handicapped adults with the BASCA, Inc. program. They never had a painting class before, and did a great job of interpreting their own style of a Tree. Back in October, I painted a mural tree in the lobby of BASCA, which will have all of the donors' plaques, and I love the beauty and symbolism of a strong, well-rooted tree, in the face of a storm.
Working with special needs adults is very bittersweet for me as my first-born son, Joshua, was developmentally delayed and non-verbal. We lost him at age eight to heart disease but I have no doubt if he were here he would be painting there with us.
One of the guys brought his barney doll, which reminded me of my son. Joshua could hum the "iloveyou" song to everyone he met, although he did not speak. These students were awesome, kind, respectful and such a joy to work with. My 15 year old son and his friend, Jennifer, volunteered to help set up, then joined the others in painting their own tree. We all felt blessed to be a part of it.
Some of the students required assistance, based on their abilities.
I loved seeing each student's creativity and uniqueness in their work! We look forward to coming back again soon!
